How much is an appliance technician's call-out fee?

Each technician sets their own. Ask what it is before anybody drives out, what it covers, and whether it comes off the bill if you go ahead with the repair.

Why there is no rand figure here

Each technician we work with prices their own jobs, and the one who takes yours quotes before any work starts. We are not going to copy a figure off another website or an industry average instead. You would plan around it, and it would not be the price of your repair.

What we can tell you is what moves the price and what to ask, so the quote makes sense and two quotes can be compared.

The longer answer

A call-out fee pays for the technician getting to you and finding the fault. Some take it off the bill if you go ahead with the repair, some charge it either way. Those are two different prices, so ask which it is.

Send the make, the model and what the machine is doing before the visit. With that, the technician can often bring the right part and fix it on the first visit instead of coming back.

If the repair turns out not to be worth doing, you usually still pay the call-out. That is fair: they drove out and found the fault. It is also why a good technician tells you early.

What decides the price

Call-out and diagnosisUsually charged whether or not you go ahead, because somebody drove out and opened the machine. Ask up front whether it comes off the bill if you do go ahead.
Where you areSome technicians charge more for travel outside their usual area. Ask whether travel is on top.
Workshop or at homeA small appliance like a microwave can be cheaper to take in to a workshop than to have somebody come to you. Ask if that is an option.

Ask before they start

  1. What does the call-out cover?
  2. Does it come off the bill if I go ahead?
  3. Is travel charged on top?
  4. If you only look and I do not go ahead, what do I pay?
  5. Is the call-out taken off the bill if I go ahead with the repair?
  6. Is the part new or reconditioned?
  7. Under the Consumer Protection Act, parts and labour carry three months. Are you giving longer, and in writing?
  8. Is it worth fixing, honestly, or should I put the money towards a new one?
  9. Is that including VAT?

Questions people ask

What is the average call-out fee for an appliance technician?

Each technician sets their own, so an average would not tell you what yours will charge. Ask for the call-out fee before anybody drives out, and whether it comes off the bill if you go ahead.

Can I get a quote without a call-out?

Sometimes a rough idea, if you send the make, the model, a photo and exactly what it is doing. A firm quote usually needs somebody to see the fault, because the same symptom can have different causes.
